Ready to read!Arja Salafranca Arja Salafranca was born in Spain in 1971 to a Spanish father and a South African mother. She has lived in South Africa since the age of five. In 1993 she received a degree in African Literature and Psychology from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has had fiction and poetry published in a number of local journals and anthologies, including The Finishing Touch (Cosaw, 1992), Like a House on Fire (Cosaw, 1994), LyfSpel/BodyPlay (Kagiso, 1994), The Torn Veil (1998) and In the Rapids (Kwela, 2001). Her first poetry collection, A life stripped of illusions, received the 1994 Sanlam Award for poetry, while a short story, "Couple on the Beach", was a winner of the Sanlam award for short fiction in 1999. Her second collection of poetry, The fire in which we burn, was published in 2000. A collection of prose and poetry, glass jars among trees, which she edited with the poet Alan Finlay, was published by Jacana in 2003. Arja has worked for various newspapers in Johannesburg and now edits the Sunday Life supplement in The Sunday Independent.

Ready to read!Nokuthula Mazibuko Nokuthula Mazibuko is a 30-year-old writer based in Jo'burg. She started working in television and radio in 1997 as a scriptwriter and researcher. She has written for the award-winning health show Soulcity and the global children's show Sesame Street. Nokuthula wrote and directed her first documentary for e-tv called Lady Was a Mshoza in 1999, about women in the Sepantsula sub-culture. In 2000 she wrote and co-produced a second documentary, The Gift of Song (screened at the international film festival ZIFF). She has worked as news producer for the BBC and the youth radio station YFM. She is currently working as scriptwriter/editor for various radio and TV shows (she has written two scripts for Molo Fish II) and her novella for youth, In the Fast Lane, about girls coping with HIV/AIDS, was published in March 2003 by New Africa Books. She is a PhD student in the African Literature Department at Wits University and the winner of the 2003 Bessie Head writing fellowship.

Ready to read!Nini Bennett Nini Bennett was born in Pretoria in 1972. She obtained a BA (Honours) (cum laude) in Literary Studies (Algemene Literatuurwetenskap) from the University of Pretoria. In 2002 she obtained a Masters degree in Creative Writing (also cum laude) under the supervision of Etienne van Heerden. Her short story collection Stoornis was published by Tafelberg Publishers in 2002 and was awarded the RAU Mardene Marais Prize for the best debut publication in Afrikaans (2003).

Ready to read!Alan Finlay Alan Finlay is a poet living in Johannesburg with his wife and two sons. He has published his poetry in various journals and collections of his poems have been published by Dye Hard Press (1994, 2003) and Botsotso Publishers (1998). Amongst other projects, he most recently co-edited glass jars among trees with Arja Salafranca. He is the current editor of New Coin poetry journal (Institute for the Study of English in Africa).

Ready to read!Photo by Julian Friedmann Isobel Dixon was born in Umtata and grew up in Graaff-Reinet. She studied at Stellenbosch University and with the help of the Patrick and Margaret Flanagan Scholarship, completed Masters degrees in English Literature and Applied Linguistics at Edinburgh University. She works at the Blake Friedmann Literary Agency in London, where she represents over 30 authors from around the world, among them several prominent South Africans. She translated Marita van der Vyver's novel Breathing Space (Penguin, 2000) into English and her poetry collection Weather Eye, which won the Sanlam Prize, was published by Carapace Poets in South Africa in 2001.

Ready to read!Jaco BothaJaco Botha is a partner in the small advertising firm Big Bad Wolf Advertising. He holds a BA degree from the University of Stellenbosch and a BA (Honours) and MA degree in Creative Writing (cum laude) from the University of Cape Town. He is the author of two books (In Drie Riviere and Sweisbril, both published by Human & Rousseau) and has collaborated on several other works with prominent South African authors. In 1997 he was awarded the M-Net Bursary for Creative Writing. When not working he enjoys canoeing, cooking, playing cards and sipping on a good whisky. He thoroughly believes in the philosophy "Life is not a dress rehearsal, it's the real thing."

Ready to read!Zazah Khuzwayo Zazah Khuzwayo finished matric in 1994 and went to study Electrical Engineering up to N3. She didn't finish, and went to find work. She wrote her book called Never been at home and self-published it in 2001. In March this year it was published by David Phillip. The first chapter of the book was published by Botsotso Publishers (in their magazine), and in 2000 the same chapter appeared on LitNet.

Ready to read!Ashraf Johaardien Ashraf Johaardien is the National Co-ordinator of the Writers' Network and responsible for the overall management and development of the organisation. He is a playwright and has been associated with several South African arts and culture organisations. His plays include Coloured Son X (Baxter Theatre Centre, 1998; Circle East Theatre Company, New York, 2001); Salaam Stories (Judges Choice Award, Spier-PANSA Festival 2002; Theatre Row, New York, 2002; Spier Summer Arts Festival and Baxter Theatre, 2003); "Happy Endings" Are Extra (Baxter Theatre, 2003). Some of his work has been published by Compress and in Fidelities.

Ready to read!Manie de WaalManie de Waal is a partner in XPLANE, a company that visually communicates complex business. He grew up in the Cape and studied at Stellenbosch University and UNISA. After qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1998 he worked in the investment banks of London and Switzerland. It was during this time that he wrote his debut novel, trips, which was nominated for the Rapport/Jan Rabie Prize. He returned to Africa in 2002, spending time in Mozambique before settling in Cape Town.
