Vuka! Vuka ! (Wake up!)Press releaseThree years ago the exciting outdoor show Free Birds presented by Het Waterhuis from Rotterdam in the Netherlands toured South Africa. This year a much larger and soul-stirring production, VUKA! VUKA! (WAKE UP!) will tour South Africa during June/July 2005 with Artistic Director Roel Twijnstra. The outdoor multimedia show VUKA! VUKA!, a collaboration between artists from diverse cultures: South Africa, the Netherlands and Spain, is also a journey of discovery. This time, the spectacular creation involves artists from different theatre groups (KZN, Limpopo, Gauteng), school children from the Topsy Foundation, soundscape producer Michael Banabila, and well-known musicians Pops Mahomed and McCoy Mrubata contributing to the music. Capturing the lives of children in the streets is no mean feat: tens of thousands of children roam the streets of Johannesburg, Durban, Cape town and cities around the world. VUKA! VUKA! depicts the fusion of some of their stories and their harsh realities, survival systems and dreams. A group of them undertake a dramatic journey. Their dreams and their belief in a better world make them strong and less vulnerable to the real world out there. A world of animals and ancestors, fantasies, stories and tales drives them finally to their goal: broken, but fearless at the end of their journey. Performance Venues
