Spier Arts Summer Season presents a fusion of fashion, ballet and Queen

The Cape Town City Ballet presents Queen at the Ballet as part of the Spier Arts Summer Season 2005/6 programme. After a previous season of sold-out shows, this production, which fuses graceful dance, classic rock music and top-end fashion, will enthral Spier audiences.

The statuesque dancers perform under the star-studded summer skies at the Spier amphitheatre choreographed by award-winning Sean Bovim, in his tribute to esteemed rock outfit, Queen. While the title suggests that the dance is limited to classical Ballet, it is in actual fact a vibrant celebration of dance styles from jazz to contemporary. This dynamic array of movement is reflective of Bovim’s unique and inventive choreography style.

Freddy Mercury’s vocals are reinterpreted by Duncan Royce and Luciano Zuppa who add their own spin to the show by performing live amongst the dancers. Royce will be joined by renowned soprano Zanne Stapelberg and Aviva Pelham who share the role with a glittering finale of Barcelona.

The combined dance and musical magic is complemented with set design by the creative expertise of local abstract artist Tay Dall. Dall is known for her emotive lashings of colour on unusual mediums such as doors and shutters. Her visually striking exhibits highlight the eclecticism of the costume design which ranges from Levi to established South African couturists Gavin Rajah, Craig Port, Christiaan Gabriel Du Toit and Malcolm Kluk.

This show is styled on diversity and celebrates difference through convergence. Audiences will be captivated by the coming together of music, dance, fashion and art and are invited to sing (or hum) along to familiar rock ballads.

Queen at the Ballet will be showing at the Spier Estate on 24- 28, 31 January and 1 February 2006 at 20h30. Bookings can be made through the Box Office at +27 021 809 1111, or Computicket and for further information log onto www.spierarts.org.za Ticket prices: R160, R120 and R100. A dress rehearsal will be performed on 23 January 2006 and the ticket prices are R50 for unreserved seats.
