A fusion of classic and African culture presented by DDK and Spier Arts Trust summer season

Theatrical company, Dimpho Di Kopane brings three productions that have attained international success to the Spier Arts Summer Season. Dimpho Di Kopane (DDK) means ‘combined talents’ in Sotho, which is an apt description for the union of talents in this performing group. DDK presents Yiimimangaliso, The Mysteries; Ibali loo Tsotsi The Beggars Opera and IKumkanikazi yeKhephu, The Snow Queen as part of the Spier Arts summer season programme.

Yiimimangaliso The Mysteries is based on the popularity of The Mystery Cycles dramatic versions of biblical stories in medieval Europe street theatre. The score has an eclectic mix of ancient and contemporary Xhosa, Afrikaans, Zulu and Dutch sources. It is largely vocally based and makeshift instruments are made of objects from scrap yards.

Ibali loo Tsotsi, The Beggars Opera is a reprisal of John Gay’s 1728 opera, The Beggars Opera, with a South African spin. The classic is a satire of the opulent nature of opera productions of eighteenth century. It is decorated with greed, robbery and real-life shenanigans. The music is a combination of old English and new South African folk songs.

Another classic remake is IKumkanikazi yeKhephu The Snow Queen, which is a reinterpretation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. It incorporates traditional and original music with Xhosa ceremonies to highlight the themes of reconciliation and love.

These productions are presented by the troupe of performers from DDK. It was formed in 2000 when art director, Mark Donford-May and music director, Charles Hazlewood, then working for the Broomhill Opera in London, were asked to form an ensemble company in Cape Town. Donford-May and Hazlewood selected a dynamic group by hosting over 2000 auditions throughout rural and urban South Africa. The talents of this group, who will perform in this theatrical festival includes Andiswa Kedama, Pauline Malefane, Lungelwa Blou and Zorro Sidloyi.

Most of the performers generally come from the impoverished area from Khayelitsha and surrounding areas. Recently, Andiswa Kedama and Pauline Malefane took the challenge of translating Bizet’s opera ‘Carmen’ into Xhosa. The product was 2005 Golden Bear winner at the Berlin Film Festival, U-Carmen eKhayelitsha.

The DDK Lyric Theatre Festival offers patrons the juxtaposition of classic tales in an African context. The combined performance of sing, dance and unique instruments will enthrall audiences.

DDK Lyric Theatre Festival will be showing at their new 200 seat theatre at the Lynedoch Eco Village on the R310 across the road from the Spier Wine Estate on 24 – 28, 31st January - 4 February and 7 – 11 February 2006 at 20h00. Bookings can be made through the Box Office at +27 021 809 1111, and for further information log onto www.spierarts.org.za. Ticket prices: R50 unreserved. Please note: A special price will be arranged for audience members from Khayelitsha and surrounding areas including transport and ticket. For more information contact (021) 881 3193.
