Echo

Annesu de Vos — 1993

a prose poem for spoken voice and synthesizer

After you left, my spirit guides spoke for the first time.
They told me to tell you I love you, even though I cannot
speak but can only repeat after you what you say.

Now that I am alone in this cave, they alone speak here.
Thus I repeat after them.

You are not here, but you are not absent from here.

I give you power over me.

I give you power, power, power over me.

I give you the power to sustain you while you watch and wait
for your image to come alive.

And what if your image stays as it is, forever?

Then still, I give you power over me.

Our love is a litany of repetitive phrases. Our love is a
tautology.

Until now, I have not acknowledged their existence. I think
secretly that my spirit guides are demons. And I have
always known that demons do not exist.

I said, what if he is the very devil, and what if these
guides of mine are his minions who are in league with him?

And now I say, so what if?

I am the eternal now, and I am always with you.

If you are the very devil himself, I will follow you into
eternal damnation, damnation. I will, yes I will.

If you were death itself, I would embrace you. I would be
the dead for as long as you would live with me, live with
me. And if you would live with me eternally, so should I be
in eternal death with you, death with you.

You have given definition to this that I am. You have
forced me to accept this existence against my will. There
is nothing I want more than to do this for you. My will is
at war with me. My war has been waiting for a general to
give orders, orders.

I repeat after you, repeat after me.

I repent of nothing that I have become.

I accept no sacrifice in my behalf for any other reason than
that the colour of the blood suits the wearer.

I shall do anything and everything for the sake of colour
coordination.

And I love, and adore, and worship you: you, above all
creatures.

You are one in five billion.

You are one in infinity.

Your Creator is Nothing without you, Narcissus.
