South Africa Writing

Jason le Grange

South Africa boasts a rich literary heritage of writers. Two Nobel Laureates, JM Coetzee and Nadine Gordimer, received international acclaim for their anti-apartheid writing. In addition to them, there are many young and upcoming writers that have not been published in South Africa, this being largely due to the small local publishing industry. South Africa Writing, a new literary magazine to be published from January 2006, is looking for submissions from South African writers.

South Africa Writing will give an opportunity for up-and-coming writers to get published and hopefully catch the eye of a prominent publisher. Furthermore, South Africa Writing will publish creative work in any of South Africa's 11 official languages and will have the work translated into English to be published alongside the original.

The opportunity has come for aspiring writers to submit poems and short stories for publication in South Africa Writing.

South Africa Writing will be published quarterly and will include:

  • interviews with prominent as well as up-and-coming authors
  • columns by respected authors and creative writing teachers Anne Schuster and Colleen Higgs from the Centre for the Book on creative writing and getting published in South Africa
  • book reviews
  • book club information, and
  • listings on coming events, publications and readings.

For more details on South Africa Writing's submission policy please look at www.southafricawriting.com or post submissions to South Africa Writing, PO Box 717, Rondebosch 7701, e-mail southafricawriting@mweb.co.za or fax 086 684 2608.
Submissions are ongoing and work will be kept for up to 9 months.
