Skinner's Drift

A mesmerising account of a woman's journey into her own past.

There is a tie that runs deeper in Africa than it does anywhere else in the world - a connection to land, to roots, to home. After a decade of self-imposed exile, Eva van Rensburg returns to South Africa to see her father. She had vowed never to return to this place of haunted memories and broken hearts, but her father is dying. It is her duty. It is her home.

Her journey leads her back in time as she discovers her deceased mother's journals. As she delves into the depths of her own past, she discovers the corrosive secret that shattered her family and bled into the lives of all the inhabitants of Skinner's Drift, their farm on the banks of the untamed Limpopo River.

Immensely powerful and beautifully written, Skinner's Drift is a moving story of the human struggle to avoid accountability and the universal desire to find forgiveness. Lisa Fugard vividly portrays the violent reality of rural South Africa in a way that is intense and disturbing in equal measure.
