HSBC / SA PEN Literary Award 2005

Press release

SA PEN, in partnership with HSBC Bank and New Africa Books, is pleased to announce a new literary award in southern Africa. Young writers from South Africa and all other SADC countries are invited to submit original, previously unpublished

SHORT STORIES.

The best entries will be selected for a book to be published next year entitled New writing from Southern Africa - 2005

The final judge will be:
Nobel Laureate JM Coetzee

Three prizes will be awarded:
US$5 000, US$3 000 and US$2 000

Rules for submission of entries:

  •  Entrants must not be older than 40 on closing date
  •  Entrants must be citizens of SADC* countries
  •  Stories must be in English, on any subject
  •  Word length should be between 2500 and 4000 words
  •  Entries must be previously unpublished
  •  Entries must be typed, in double spacing, on one side of A4 paper. Three copies must be submitted
  •  No name or address should appear on the typescript, but each page must carry the title of the story. All entries will be judged anonymously
  •  A covering letter with the name, address and photocopy of the ID of the entrant must be included
  •  Closing date: 30 November 2004
  •  Send your entry to:
