New literature award! Maskew Miller Longman launches award for all 11 official South African languagesMaskew Miller Longman press release
Maskew Miller Longman, the leading South African educational publisher, has a tradition of embracing cultural diversity. We are proud of our literary offerings in all 11 official languages and to this end are pleased to announce the launch of the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Award competition, where entries for original and unpublished youth novels are invited. We aim to further develop literature in all 11 official South African languages and encourage aspirant writers to explore their talent. The Maskew Miller Longman Literature Award is unique in that it is the only award that gives equal weighting to all 11 official languages. The Maskew Miller Longman Literature Award will be an annual award with a different genre being explored each year. The focus for 2006 is novels for young South Africans today. Total prize money exceeds R150 000 in cash, with the winning entry in each language category receiving R10 000 and runners-up R5 000 each. All winning entries will be published and the runners-up also stand the chance of having their work published. Experts on youth literature will screen all entries submitted, while final judging will be performed by the following prominent literary figures: English – Prof A Oliphant Maskew Miller Longman will be conducting writers' workshops countrywide, including a special workshop at the Cape Town Book Fair in June 2006, to assist aspiring writers. The competition will be officially launched at the Cape Town Book Fair on 18 June 2006. The closing date for the competition is 30 September 2006 and entries must be accompanied by an entry form available from Sumaya at (021) 532 6000 / sumaya@mml.co.za or downloaded from our website www.mml.co.za.
* The Cape Town Book Fair workshop will be facilitated by Lesley Beake. Interested parties need to send a one-page CV and a short motivation to jaco@mml.co.za, or fax Jaco van Straten at 021 531 0716. The workshop will take place on Sunday, 18 June and will run from 11h00 to 14h30.
