"Time to celebrate as local writing delivers the goods," says Exclusive BooksExclusive Books Homebru 2006South African writing is in better shape than ever, with the 2006 Homebru collection of new local books, collated under the banner of Celebrate South Africa, representing a fantastic crop of hugely entertaining reading. "There is an ease about the 25 books that have made it onto the list this year, a sense that local publishing has become comfortable in its skin and that we are celebrating the varied experiences of living in South Africa without the angst of earlier years," says Exclusive Books Marketing Manager Batya Green-Bricker. As a result, the list ranges from Tom Eaton's belly-laugh funny The De Villiers Code with its distinctive insider humour, to former model, fashion and beauty editor and actress, Nakedi Ribane's fascinating Beauty … A Black Perspective - a look at our multifaceted black fashion and beauty culture from the 50s to the present, and Gerald Kraak's fearlessly graphic gay novel Ice in the Lungs. Also included on the list is the delightful Afrikaans debut novel Kroes by Pat Stametelos, set in the Western Cape of the 60s, as well as Antjie Krog's latest poetry collection, Verweerskrif, simultaneously appearing in English as Body Bereft. "We are confident that the books that finally made the list from the 140 submissions received all represent that quality - sheer good reading - that booksellers are so happy to find and that South African readers simply need to know about," Green-Bricker says. "Homebru is unashamedly by South Africans, about South Africa and the South African experience. It is our annual platform to highlight, recognise and encourage the excellent work that our local publishers and writers are producing." A key feature of this year's collection is the inclusion of books with a "regional" or "group-specific" appeal. "Our stores cater to a variety of customer profiles which differ quite markedly according to region, city or even suburb. This is something that we have considered in Homebru 2006, hence the inclusion of Praba Moodley's A Scent so Sweet, which will have a unique appeal to KwaZulu-Natal readers, and Rosa's District 6 by Rozena Maart, which will resonate strongly with Cape Town book lovers," Green-Bricker explains. Also noteworthy is the presence of powerful female voices. "From the beginning, five years ago, Homebru has always had an exceptionally strong contingent of women's writing. This has now become something of a tradition and one of the remarkable traits of South African publishing that we are delighted to support." The Homebru 2006 Celebrate South Africa collection will feature prominently at all Exclusive Books stores nationally during May and will be celebrated with a full programme of book launches and in-store appearances by participating writers.
