South Africa is a unique country with different cultures. Because we are so diverse we hardly practice our cultures together in a meaningful way. So whereto from now? Should we - as Afrikaners, Zulus, etcetera - come together for a celebration? The posters at the KKNK with the head of Constand Viljoen on a black woman’s body caused quite a stir Ö The point is: potjiekos and boeremusiek will always be part of an Afrikaans festival. The Grahamstown National Arts Festival has shown us that a festival with solid “British” roots can reflect the Rainbow Nation, without losing its English flavour. So why not organise a Zulu, or African language festival? What we really need in South Africa is to practice ubuntu by trying to understand and appreciate our cultural and linguistic diversity.
         Suid-Afrika is ’n unieke land met vele kulture. Weens die diversiteit, kom ons selde bymekaar om ons kulture saam te beoefen. Wat nou? Moet ons, die Afrikaners, die Zoeloes en al die ander nou saam fees hou? Daardie plakkaat van Constand Viljoen se kop op ’n swart vrou se lyf het juis so ’n opstootjie veroorsaak by die KKNK Ö Potjiekos en Boeremusiek sal altyd deel wees van die Afrikaner se kultuur. Die Grahamstadse Nasionale Kunstefees het egter getoon dat ’n geleentheid met sterk “Britse” wortels die reŽnboognasie kan verteenwoordig sonder om die Engelse inhoud te verskraal. Hoekom dan nie ook ’n Zoeloe fees nie? Of ’n Afrika taalfees? Wat ons regtig nodig het, is om ubuntu uit te leef en mekaar se tale en kulture te leer waardeer.

Potjiekos, arts festivals, rainbows and languages
