Ballet and Modern Dance National Championships 2006

Di Sparks

The National Society of Dance Teachers’ Ballet and Modern Dance National Championships 2006 takes place at the Pro Musica Theatre, Roodepoort on 22 July and 23 July. These National NSDT championships are held annually and attract candidates from all over South Africa. The competition is open to dance students of NSDT members only and affords them the opportunity of competing at a national level and outside their own studios. The championship is run on international competition standards.

The young dancers, many with their sights set on a professional dance career, compete in junior and senior categories of Ballet and Modern Dance for prize money totalling R19 000 and floating trophies.

Saturday 22 July

Starts at 2.30 pm with the Junior Modern section - the Rita Michaelson Junior Championships – followed by the Nina Bodenham Senior Modern Championship at 6.30 pm.

Sunday 23 July

Also starts at 2.30 pm with the Junior Ballet - the Gwen Evans Championship – followed at 6.00 pm by the Marjorie Sturman Senior Ballet Championship.

Each competitor will perform optional set pieces, repertoire and in the final round a dance of their own choice. The prizes and trophies are awarded at the end of each session.

The programme will also include guest performances by the dancers of Vanessa-Jayne Bennett’s Moving Visions Dance Studio, Kelsey Middleton and the Bowring/Levin School of Modern and Tap Dance. Raising the temperature somewhat will be Joanne Bobrow’s fiery Spanish dance company El Rincon Flamenco.

The judging panel includes SABT’s well-known Fiona Budd, Artistic Director of the Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa, Gail Myburgh, and former Pretoria Technikon, Cape Town Ballet School graduate and now Pilates exponent, Lindy Badenhorst, together with the modern dance judges Constance Kau Mcunu, choreographer Gladys Agulhas and the internationally renowned Gregory Maqoma.

Many well-known dancers participated in past championships, among them SABT principal dancers Iain Macdonald and Anya Carstens, as well as PE-born Dane Hurst, now with Ballet Rambert. They were all winners of the biennial Bursary Award (last awarded in 2005.)

Tickets for each session are R30 and are available at the door.

For further information please phone the NSDT office: (011) 463 6851 (9.00 am –1.00 pm).

  • The National Society of Dance Teachers, an umbrella body for various dance disciplines, was established in 1965 by RAD and Cecchetti members who wanted to draw up a code of ethics for professional dance teachers and provide a platform for various dance activities for their students. As the society grew, various other dance disciplines were included.
