IBBY Congress Facts and Figures

(as at 8 July 2004)

The 29th IBBY World Congress will host around 500 delegates from over 60 countries of the world. That is more delegates than attended the 28th and 26th IBBY Congresses (in Switzerland and India, respectively) and more countries represented than in any IBBY Congress ever before.

The conference programme includes over 150 presenters. There will be papers presented, workshops, poster sessions, panels of authors and illustrators, international storytellers - and exhibition stands featuring most local publishers of children's books, as well as a Congress Bookshop run by Exclusive Books.

This is the first IBBY Congress ever to be held on the African continent. Seventeen countries of Africa will be represented, including the IBBY national sections of South Africa, Ghana, Uganda and Egypt.

So far we have assisted 58 delegates to attend the IBBY Congress. They come from as far away as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Cameroon - as well as South Africa. Total funds raised to assist delegates from Africa: R340 268. Contact: Mpho Ndebele mosikong@worldonline.co.za

Our Book Flood Schools Programme will have donated 43 picture-book libraries to underprivileged schools by the end of 2004. Each library consists of around 300 specially selected new books (many in African languages) at a cost of R6 000 for each donation. Funds raised for this Book Flood project total in excess of R270 000. It is run by the SA Children's Book Forum in conjunction with Biblionef SA and is part of the IBBY Congress effort. Proudly South African: 100 Representative Children's Books is an exhibition of South African children's literature today. Sponsored by Yamada Apiculture Centre (Japan), this exhibition will show Congress delegates the extent and strength of South African youth publications. The exhibition will later tour South Africa.

The Scholastic Outreach Programme will enable us to arrange visits of authors and illustrators to schools and libraries around the Cape Town area. Sponsored by Scholastic Inc. (USA) this will link many of the Congress delegates with local schools.
