No Cold Kitchen

Media statement from Nadine Gordimer

No Cold Kitchen
Biography of Nadine Gordimer by Ronald Suresh Roberts

The quotation of a passage from a letter by Nadine Gordimer to Ronald Suresh Roberts appearing on the jacket of his work No Cold Kitchen implies and therefore claims that she endorses the book with her enthusiastic approval. The implication and the claim are false.

Nadine Gordimer had never seen the version of the published biography until it appeared in the bookshops.

A draft version was submitted to her in February 2003 in accordance with her contractual right to "review the draft submitted to the publisher and the right to review a galley of the final text as edited and approved for publication. If Gordimer poses any objections for any reason at all, and such objections are not rectified to her satisfaction, then she has the right to withdraw any endorsement or public acknowledgement of her association with the book, and it may not be called an authorised biography."

She returned to Mr Roberts the text of the draft, annotated and accompanied by a letter dated March 5th 2003, citing her objections. No subsequent draft, amended or otherwise, was ever submitted in response to Ms Gordimer.

More than two years later, when Mr Roberts and his publisher announced a forthcoming publication of the book, Nadine Gordimer sought her right, without result, to review the final version intended for publication. The book as published contains changes, including highly offensive additions, in breach of her right of final review.

The jacket quotation is an excerpt, the opening paragraph of Nadine Gordimer's letter, dated January 16th 2003, in response to an early draft of the book. This preceded her reading of the subsequent draft, to which she responded on March 5th 2003 as stated above. The quoted paragraph from her letter of January 16th 2003 was, in fact, in that letter, followed directly with objections to many passages in and aspects of the early draft submitted.
